From The Outside Looking In
From the outside looking in
sometimes I wonder what you feel
and how you think
with you in my arms, distance could be sensed
that invisible glass
you keep between us
are like pieces of broken colorful puzzle
that will never fit.
From the outside looking in
a ‘safe world’ is built from within
keeping in the sun and the rain
unspoken words and frustrations
expressed in motions
often misunderstood.
If only you knew,
that there is nothing I wouldn’t do,
to have with you that one moment
see you opening up the spectrum rainbow shell
letting me in and talk to you
even just for a day.
From the outside looking in
in the autism’s grasps he is a prisoner
bars so strong they can’t be loosened
mumbles of empty words
clusters of giggles and meaningless laughs
inviting cold and hurtful stares.
But as he paints his heart,
his dreams and wishes flow
the ugly shell cracks…
and
From the inside he is slowly blooming
with his pencils of color and crumpled papers
he breaks the cursed spectral barriers
he reaches out
to me.
Emily Stephen Sekai is an aspiring writer/poet who dreams of publishing her own novel (hopefully soon!). She is currently attached to the English Language Department of the Faculty of Language and Communication Studies in the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
In the poet's own words with regards to 'From the Outside Looking In': "My 16 year old Benjamin is a High Functioning Autistic and he is my inspiration for this poem and most of my work to be exact. This poem has never been published."
